BEAT THE HEAT WITH SOME SUMMER COOLERS

MY TIPS TO STAY COOL THIS SUMMER

With temperatures rising and we sweating it out even without working out at the Gym it’s very important to avoid dehydration.

We lose a lot of our essential salts, minerals, and body fluids during extreme summer months and it’s important to replenish them by drinking plenty of water and supplementing the salts and minerals in the form of home-made coolers to prevent dehydration. Exhaustion, muscle cramps, headaches, etc are the first common signs of dehydration that we must watch out for.

It’s time for SUMMER COOLERS once again!

Be it water, Lime Juice, Gooseberry Juice, Buttermilk, Mango drink or Amsul or Kokum drink and many more such coolers are what you must have at hand to quench your thirst and to keep the body well hydrated and cool.

The last time I posted these on this blog but many of my old and new followers requested the reposting of the homemade Summer Coolers made by my mother's generation - no sodas or fizzy drinks, that only cause health problems in the long run, just healthy, easy-to-make summer coolers!

Till I post a few more coolers on my Blog and on my YouTube channel,  click the link below and follow the recipes for the summer coolers I posted earlier.

Summer Coolers

These Summer Coolers do not just quench our thirst but we benefit from the micronutrients, vitamins, and essential salts that they contain!

Fresh Amla or Gooseberry juice is the richest source of Vit C along with Lime. It is an antioxidant and is said to be good for digestion, heart health, and liver.

Lime Juice too is a rich source of Vit C and helps build our immunity, and it is said to reduce the health risks of the heart, prevent kidney stones, and helps the skin firm and healthy.

I drink a lot of fresh lime and amla juice without the additives primarily for Vitamin C and to raise my immunity against common colds and coughs. Lime is good for oily skin too.

Coming to Curd or Yoghurt there are lots in it that benefit our digestive tract and our skin too. They are full of pro-biotics and easily digestible proteins.

Curd has good probiotics that help the digestive system and it is a good stomach settler if eaten with a little rice. It is also very good to eat with an upset stomach. Incidentally, curd is not just good for the stomach but for the skin too!

Another summer cooler I have posted is the Amsul or Kokum (Garcinia Indica ) cool drink called  Solkadi. Kokum is a native fruit mostly available in coastal areas and is an integral part of Maharashtrian and Goan cuisines used in fish curries, vegetarian "Amtis" ie curries and for making drinks like Solkadi and Kokum Juice.
The small black peels are beneficial healthwise too – they aid in digestion and are natural antioxidants. They are said to be helpful in weight loss diets and are used in anti-aging products. You can purchase Kokum online on Amazon etc or you can stock up on your next visit to coastal Maharashtra or Goa.

Let me share with you some Beauty Tips which were given to me by my beauticians :

The sweltering heat dries up the skin forming wrinkles and it’s so important to moisturize our skin, particularly at night.

An excellent way to do this is to soak 5 almonds in milk overnight and the next morning grind them into a smooth paste, add some fresh milk cream and the paste apply on your face. You can store any excess paste in your fridge for a few days for use later.

Over-exposure to the sun causes Suntan and Sunburn and when I was in college I learned that Curd or butter milk made from it is good for removing Suntan.
Dip a piece of muslin cloth in sour buttermilk and swathe your face for five minutes with it. Leave on for 15 minutes and then wash your face with cold water. I do this whenever I return from an outing in the sun. It was so cooling and refreshing!

Curd also helps in calming sunburnt skin. Take a tablespoon of buttermilk and mix a teaspoon of tomato puree into it. Apply where there is a sunburn and wash it off after ½ an hour with water.

Homemade Beauty Masks for various types of skins can be made with lime juice and curd but more on that in the next post!

So till then don your hats, protect your eyes with sunglasses and your skin with sunscreens and sip the Summer Coolers to keep yourself  hydrated and refreshed!
